A Little Room to Grow: A Classic Boys' Bedroom in Blue

There’s something I love about decorating boys' bedrooms. Finding that balance between a room that feels playful and full of childhood, but is also beautiful, comfortable, and ready to grow with them. When I just had one girl, I felt like the luckiest mum in the world, to be a girl Mom and all the pretty options, but when we found out our twins were going to be boys, I fell in love with the timelessness of boy's rooms. Patterns like plaids and stripes that never go out of style.

Now, as a mum of four boys, I've learned that their rooms change almost as quickly as they do. The little cars and treasured toys eventually give way to books, collections, sports equipment, and the things that make each boy uniquely himself. But I don't think that means we need to start over with every new stage.

I love the idea of beginning with a few classic pieces, layering in things they love, and allowing the room to evolve naturally over the years.

That was the inspiration behind this boys' bedroom mood board, built around our The Blues Plaid wallpaper.

01. Start with a Pattern That Can Grow with Them

I've always loved plaid in boys' bedrooms. It feels familiar and comforting, with just enough pattern to give a room personality without dictating everything else that goes into it.

For this design, I chose The Blues Plaid wallpaper, with its soft blues, ivory background, and classic intersecting stripes.

One of my favourite things about a plaid is how easily you can change the feeling of the room around it. Paired with painted panelling, warm wood furniture, and traditional details, it feels wonderfully classic. But introduce simpler furniture and different accessories, and the very same wallpaper can feel fresh and relaxed.

In this mood board, I paired it with deep blue-grey wainscoting. I love how the darker paint grounds the lighter wallpaper and gives the room a little more depth.

A little design tip: When choosing a paint colour to sit beneath patterned wallpaper, try pulling one of the deeper tones from the design. It helps the two finishes feel connected, even when there's quite a bit of contrast between them.

02. Bring in Warm Wood and Something Old

The walnut spindle bed was one of the first pieces I chose for this board.

There's something so lovely about turned wood furniture, particularly in children's rooms. The craftsmanship and familiar shapes bring a sense of history, and the warmth of the wood is a beautiful contrast to all those cooler blues.

I added a little scalloped wooden shelf, vintage-inspired framed artwork, and some small collected treasures.

I'm always drawn to rooms that look as though they've come together over time. Not everything has to be new or perfectly matched. A little framed picture discovered in an antique shop, a favourite childhood book, or something handed down from a grandparent can bring so much personality to a space.

Those are often the pieces that end up meaning the most.

03. Layer Pattern Without Making the Room Feel Busy

With plaid on the walls, it might seem safer to keep everything else completely plain. But I actually love introducing a few smaller patterns, especially in the bedding.

The trick is to vary the scale.

A larger plaid on the walls can sit beautifully alongside a narrow ticking stripe or a small gingham check. By keeping the colours fairly consistent, the patterns complement each other rather than compete.

For this room, I chose soft blue stripes, a little check, and plenty of ivory. The bedding brings softness to the stronger lines of the wallpaper and panelling.

Underfoot, a textured wool rug adds another quiet layer without introducing another bold pattern.

04. Leave Room for Childhood

As much as I love beautiful furniture and carefully chosen fabrics, I never want a child's room to feel too precious to enjoy.

The little vintage-inspired ride-on car might be my favourite detail in this board. Alongside the knitted cardigan, wooden toy camera, and comfortable blue chair, it reminds us that this is a room for a little boy, not simply a decorating project.

And those are the details that can change as he grows.

Today it might be toy cars and bedtime stories. In a few years, perhaps a collection of favourite books, a treasured trophy, or artwork he's made himself.

The room should have space for all of it.
